The first part of this project is a WordPress site for a boat shrink wrapping and hauling business in Connecticut Shrink the Boat. Search visibility was a priority so Local Search was optimized. Local listings can be important. I’ve found links to a company going to a competitor, phone numbers incorrect. A customer who is trying to reach you is much more important than site traffic that may or may not convert. Clients are better than traffic so we make sure all your communications channels are open and correct. The Pete’s Marine Services site performs really well providing ample customers that help grow the business.
The second part of this project was a scheduling website for boat pumpouts. Having responsibility for one of the Connecticut coast’s busiest areas, Coastal Clean Waters is primarily a booking website.
I located a plugin with a very nice layout and edited some PHP code to replace staff with location. Mystic River, Thames River, and Fishers Island boaters use the site to schedule their state-sponsored pumpouts.
Above, Griswold at Night by Jack Wilson. Griswold is a hand screenprinting mill located in Rhode Island. With a site lacking search optimization and a wide-open competitive field, we had great success locating sources of new customers for Griswold.
Google is a text-reader
The largest issue with the mill website was text. The site had information in image form, pictures of text, rather than actual HTML text. Google didn’t have much to find on the site so wasn’t able to display the site for searchers. I added lots of text about the company, mill, services, sample, yardages etc. Google became very happy.
Google is also crazy about new content
Griswold’s clients are talented artisans. We also started a blog using their fabric as examples to potential clients of the quality and volume of work possible. Each new artisan was featured and gorgeous images of their Griswold printed fabric being used in products were shown. The publicity was good for the mill and the artists. We drove a fair amount of traffic to their sites by featuring each artist.
Normally you wouldn’t have a separate blog but Griswold had so few competitors, one of two mills left in the USA, that it ended up occupying several of the top spots in Google searches rather than the typical one. We liked that so we never combined them.
Check out the blog Hand Printed Fabric and follow an artist back to their site and buy something beautiful today.
Stunning visual map presentations and all at a reasonable cost. Mapbox uses and open source mapping project that is constantly being updated. It’s in use by Foursquare and many other leading edge companies and is generally considered the strongest competitor to Google Maps.
One of my first WordPress websites was for Inclusion, a non-profit fostering development of special needs children and teens into independent adult life. Inclusion is no longer an active organization but I enjoyed providing them with a website while they were in action.
